Amti Dal – serves 3

Ingredients:


  • Toor Dhal – ½ cup

  • Turmeric Powder – 1 pinch

  • Water – 2 cups (pressure cooking)

  • 2 kokums/ 1 tsp of tamarind + 2 tbsp of hot water

  • Kala Masala – 2 tsp

  • Jaggery – ½ tbsp

  • Coriander Leaves (chopped) ½ tbsp

  • Water – 1 cup

  • Grated Coconut – 1 tbsp

  • Salt – to taste

  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

  • Curry Leaves – 7 leaves

  • Green Chillies – 2 nos

  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp

  • Asafetida – a pinch

  • Oil – 2 tbsp

  • Chopped Coriander for garnish


Method:

  • Wash the dal. Add two cups of water and pressure cook with turmeric powder, for 7-8 whistles, until the dal is well cooked and is in a mash-able consistency.

  • Let the steam settle; mash the dal well and leave it aside.

  • In a pan heat oil, splutter mustard seeds and add asafetida and turmeric powder. To this add the green chillies, curry leaves and sauté well.

  • Now add the dal and stir well.

  • To this, add kokum extract or tamarind extract, kala masala, jiggery and coriander leaves and stir well. Let it cook for 10-12 minutes till desired consistency is reached.A

  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
